Creating Structure Without Losing Light

This project centred around creating separation between two living spaces without losing the openness, natural light, or character that already existed within the property.

The original opening featured exposed brickwork and substantial timber detailing, offering a strong architectural feature within the home. The challenge was introducing a modern steel system that felt refined and intentional while still respecting the warmth and texture of the original structure.

The result is a bespoke internal steel door that creates definition between the spaces while maintaining a strong visual connection throughout the home.

Designing Around the Existing Structure

One of the most important aspects of this project was ensuring the steel system worked naturally within the existing opening.

Older properties rarely offer perfectly square or uniform structural openings, particularly where exposed brick and original beams are involved. Rather than forcing the opening to suit the product, the steel system was carefully designed around the building itself.

Balancing Separation and Openness

A key objective for the client was to create clearer zoning between the adjoining spaces while still allowing light to travel naturally throughout the interior.

The steel door provides a subtle division without making either room feel enclosed.

The glazing maintains visibility between spaces, helping the layout feel connected and sociable, while the steel framework introduces a stronger sense of structure and definition.

This type of internal steel system works particularly well within open-plan homes where clients want greater flexibility without compromising the flow of the property.

The Importance of Proportion

Projects like this demonstrate why proportion matters so much within steel design.

The ultra-slim steel profiles allow the glazing pattern to feel refined rather than dominant, particularly against the texture and weight of the exposed brickwork.

Every sightline was considered carefully to ensure the system felt calm, cohesive, and architecturally resolved within the wider interior.

Rather than competing with the character of the property, the steel complements it.
